This past Monday, June 5th, was World Environmental Day. Here at Movement we believe that every day is environmental day, that is why we have dedicated ourselves to creating clothing that has a sustainable future.
While big business remains one of the biggest culprits in environmental destruction, it's our impact as individuals that we can not only control, but may have the most far reaching effects as far as how we can turn things around.
Saving the environment can seem like an overwhelming task, but on a personal basis it's the little things we do daily that can have the most impact on the environment. Award winning writer Amanda Euringer - whose series on toxins in the workplace was nominated for a National Magazine Award - outlines two simple changes we can make that will have a big impact on the environment.
1)Vote with your wallet.
This is possibly the easiest way we have as individuals to change the world around us. Paying attention to what we support with our money can turn the tide of companies and products that are wasteful or have a heavy toxic load. Pay attention to who and what you are supporting every time you take out your wallet. Money really does shape our world. Take a little time to look into the companies you are supporting: do they have a mission statement that they stand behind? Do they give back? Are they trying to operate in the greenest way possible?
The image below shows one of the micro loans that Movement Global has contributed to via the Pamoja Foundation
2) Use less
In her series on Toxics: Your Right To Know, Ms. Euringer discovered that one of the major culprits in the toxic load on our environment was overuse. Scott Stove, who was the manager of facilities services for Burnaby School District 41, noticed that by freehand pouring cleaning supplies into buckets, most people ( including himself) were far exceeding the recommended amount suggested on the labels. Simply by putting single use pumps heads on all their cleaning supplies, the maintenance department for the school district of Burnaby managed to cut the amount of toxins going into their environment by over 2/3's - and they saved money. Lots of money.
Many of us free pour products like shampoo, dish soap, and cleaning supplies without ever reading a label. Using less doesn't just mean using your car less, it also means using less of everything you buy, especially cleaning supplies, but also clothing. Even the greenest clothing has an impact on the environment. Everything we make and use affects the world around us. Less not more means making sure that you are using the least amount necessary, and maybe spending a little more for something that will last longer.
What is Movement Global doing to save the environment?
When this company was started over a decade ago, Amrita Sondhi had a vision of total sustainability in mind. She wanted a company that produced clothing that was the greenest possible, and that would give back to the world on a social level as well.
- Less not more is our motto: we make clothing that has lasted up to a decade and beyond! By sourcing the highest quality fabric available, and using high quality thread, our clothing stands the test of time.
- Modular means each piece does more: You don't need two pairs of pants if one pair can be worn two ways. This is the same process we apply to each piece in our line. They either are reversible ( sometimes in several ways), multi-style, or have been designed to create other styles with our line.
- We offset our environmental impact on a social level. By giving back with the Pamoja foundation, we are helping those in the poorest countries create sustainable businesses for themselves. Poverty also has a direct impact on the environment , and not the least because it lessens the choices that people can make with their wallets.
While cleaning up big business is a good long term goal, ultimately we have the power to change our environment simply by using our wallets to hold businesses accountable, and by choosing to change how we consume products in the first place.
Everything's coming up Movement with our favourite styles and new colour mixes for Spring.

One Skirt = So many looks
Alexandra is showing the versatility of our Hannah Skirt in Forest Mix and Fungi. Below she wears this with our Kelly Drape in matching Fungi with the Forest Mix on the inside to create a gorgeous cowl necked dress.
Below Alexandra is wearing the Hannah Skirt with the Forest Mix side out, and our best-selling Stephanie Tee in matching Forest Mix for a curvy v-neck tee dress.
The Hannah Skirt can also be worn on it's own as a sleeveless dress - and we designed it so that it actually stays up! Or paired with our J8 Sonia Wrap for a long sleeved dress for cooler nights.
Two classic looks in Carmen Long Pants
Our P12 Carmen Long pants are two-tone reversible, flattering for all body types, and as comfortable as your favourite pyjamas. Below Alexandra is wearing the Carmen Long in Black and Charcoal with a pop of colour from our Belinda Ballet reversed with the low neck in the back in Navy. We love Navy for Spring!
And here is the same pair of pants reversed with the Black side out and our classic Stephanie Tee in Charcoal.
At Movement we believe that every day should be Earth Day, so in that spirit, we are continuing our celebration of sustainability this weekend. Come in to either our Bowen Island, or Vancouver store to see our promotional sustainability items this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday!
How are we supporting the Earth?
- Our fabric is made in Canada, under our relatively strict Canadian laws for waste etc...While we could get our fabric more cheaply overseas, we found the quality to be not as long lasting, and the general manufacturing laws to be less sustainable.
- Our clothing is DURABLE. We looked for a long time to find the most durable bamboo blend fabric on the planet ( in our experience). Our customers keep some of their pieces for more than a decade!
- We are locally made and designed, so our clothing isn't travelling across the oceans to get to you!
- Our fabrics are bamboo and organic cotton...two of the most sustainable fabrics on the planet.
- Our clothing is modular, meaning you can get more looks out of each piece.
- Our motto is "Less Not More". Our customers are loyal precisely because they know they are getting durable, sustainable, multi-use items that look and feel beautiful. Guilt Free!
- Pamoja Foundation: we put a percentage of each of our sales towards the Pamoja Foundation which goes towards micro financing women in business in Africa. We understand that sustainability is also about creating sustainable futures for women around the world.
Earth Day is Every Day Promotion!
Here is our list of promo items for our ongoing Sustainability Celebration that runs through this weekend in both stores until Sunday April 30th.

Movement is proud to support the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival!
March 30th-April 23 2017
presented by Vancouver Board of Parks and recreation
The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (VCBF) is an annual spring festival held in Vancouver, British Columbia to celebrate the beauty of Vancouver’s cherry trees. The festival’s fundamental objectives includes public education through seasonal, cherry-themed, city-wide viewing programs, musical performances, and fine art and craft exhibitions. It enables Vancouverites and those in surrounding areas to appreciate the beauty of cherry blossoms.
The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival was founded in 2005 by Linda Poole, (a frequent Movement customer, we are proud to say!), to commemorate the 800 cherry trees given by Japan to the City of Vancouver.
11th annual festival March 30-April 23th 2017, check out the website for calendar of events. www.vcbf.ca
As you know, we make small batch Canadian made sustainable clothing. This means we are often sell out of favourite styles and colours
We are currently Fully Stocked for Spring!
( Shown in Teal)
This was one of our best-selling tops in a favourite colour. We just had it remade. Reversible front to back, and layers really well with J8 Sonia Wrap to turn it effortlessly into a number of long sleeve tops so whether or not summer arrives, you will look fabulous and be cozy in breathable vegetable cashmere!
( Shown in Charcoal Mix)
This outfit looks fantastic on every body. It's super stylish here in a single tone silhouette in charcoal mix. The Single Take Tank is shown reversed here. Our Nyla Gaucho is high waisted, and single layered making it the next best thing to naked. If you want an outfit that is as comfortable as your favourite pyjamas, but makes you look like you are shopping in Paris, this is it.
For fun you can also mix and match this with a colour popping Gina Cowl ( shown here in Nova Red worn upside down for a more cropped look, and with a hood). If Nova Red is sold out try Teal, Black, Charcoal Mix, or Navy Mix.
( Shown in Stellar Blue, Chanterelle & Espresso)

About Vicky Frederiksen
"I was born and raised in North Vancouver and both my parents were architects and amazingly creative in the arts. Art and creativity were always in my life. Drawing and painting was a passion when I was very young.
In 1978, at 23, I moved to California and got a job as a draftsman making structural steel drawings. I never thought of myself as creative, since the drawings were very strict and exact.
In September 2007 I needed a drastic lifestyle change and moved to Bowen Island. I decided that if I wanted to live differently, I would have to think differently.
I discovered through painting in oils in the style of the old Masters, in a workshop with Stuart Slind, that I could be creative and imperfect as well. In fact, sometimes the imperfections turned out to be “perfect”. I loved the idea that I could flow with my inspiration when I let go of the outcome.
Through doing personal work that went hand in hand with my painting, I now live with integrity, inspiration, full of enthusiasm for life and my love of the arts."
About Carol McNaughton
"Upon retirement from the Graphic Arts industry where I supervised graphic artists, I had time and space to explore my own creativity. Soon after moving to Bowen island I started to paint, first in watercolours and then in oil.
Drawing and painting were pass times I enjoyed as a child, and I was encouraged by parents and teachers to develop my talent. Upon graduating from high school I enrolled in the art college in Calgary.
My favourite subjects are portraiture and animal painting. Living on Bowen has given me a lot of inspiration. I love and draw from its scenic beauty."
Our February 2017 #movementgiveaway winner is....Anna-Marie!

Women (and men) tell us all the time how much they love the comfort and fit of our clothing, especially for as travel destination wear. Even our dressiest clothing is as comfortable as your favourite PJ's. Long hours on the plane, train, or ox cart can be much more manageable in Movement!
Get Anna-Marie's Outfit!
Anna Marie is wearing a WA8 Circle Scarf and WJ6 Shania Cardigan in our lovely Nova Red. This cardigan is elegant, looks great on all body types, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Anna Marie has paired this with a matching Circle Scarf .
We have Circle scaves in every colour to match, or contrast pop with any outfit you can dream of. They are amazing to travel with because they can open out into a shawl if you are chilly, and fold up into the tiniest roll taking up no room at all.

Well spring is almost here, and we are taking this quiet space/time before that zany spring energy to tweak our website.
We have two new sections and a new objective for our website:
A sale section and a last chance section
As you know, our mandate is to present you with season-less modular clothing that will last for years. Some of our customers have worn their Movement clothing for a decade or more. We do small batch, Canadian-made pieces twice a year, and they can sell out fast. These are some of our last-chance pieces that are still available from years past.
A perfect place to find a style or colour that you loved, and want to replace...or find something new just for you!
Instead of searching through our stores, we will now be carrying most of our last chance items, and sale items online. A much easier way for you to find an exact style of colour that you love. You can still contact us to try it on, or see it in person, or you can simply purchase it through the site, and we will send it to you.
Our website will also be our new "warehouse" space. Check back in frequently to see what we have "in store" for you!
New this week online!
Last chance faves:
These styles sold out so quickly that we no longer have full colour and size ranges in them, so have put them online. You may be the lucky one to find your colour and size!
An all time Movement Classic the Betty Top
And two pieces that I am wearing together write now while writing this blog post, my faves...
The Grandpa Top...a perfect long top to wear over leggings, or ruche it up and put it on over jeans.
Topped with the Brit Bomber. Effortless glamorous layering...
It's travel time of year again! In the last month we have had many people come in to pick up some clothing for various destinations around the world.
Why Bamboo for Travel?
Bamboo is the ultimate travel material. Like cashmere, it's thermally regulating meaning it keeps you 2% cooler in the summer than other materials, as well as being cozy when you need it! It also doesn't need any ironing ( just hang up your clothes and the wrinkles fall away), or much washing as it is naturally anti-microbial, and it has built in UV protection. The fact that bamboo is also one of the most sustainable fabrics in the world is just a bonus!
Why Movement For Travel?
If you are reading this post then you know that our mission statement is: less not more. Our clothing is meant to work together modularly to create many different styles out of a few pieces of clothing. You can take just a few pieces of Movement on a trip, and get many days worth of looks.
Our Best Looks For Your Vacation
Below are a few of our travel-tested outfit suggestions for seasons hot weather or mid-winter vacationing.
The Hannah Skirt is fully reversible to the teal side, can be worn as a skirt or a dress and is shown here as a strapless dress with the black shrug over it. Ideal for beach or black tie! Here it is paired with the T3 Sonoka tank, and can be worn off the shoulder, as a cowl neck or upside down as a top. Pair it with a pair of black leggings (P4 the simple tight), and add boots and be cozy in colder weather.
Our Jacado Dress is fantastic for travel. It's reversible back to front for a more casual look, or a night on the town. It's paired here perfectly with a light, slightly cropped long sleeve top that falls beautifully. This top works equally well with a pair of flip flops as a beach coverup. Bamboo slub is very light and works well as an extra pair of sleeves on an air plane, or protection from the sun. If you want something a little warmer on top, you can always pair this with the Rael Sweatshirt which has the same loose crop appeal.
Not your average T, we've been told the Stephanie tee is the perfect top. It's reversible back to front for a v-to-scoop neck look, and has a longer body for the perfect fit over leggings or skirts. Everyone of these T-shirts has a matching or complimentary coloured Sonia Wrap, giving it a uniform dressy look, or a pop of colour as you wish. Our Sonia wrap is a Movement Staple with so many ways to wear it!
Want to be so comfortable you can sleep in your clothes? Our other mandate is COMFORT. We believe it's possible to look stylish at NO added expense, and this outfit is classic Movement in that regard. Our Pia Pencil skirt can be worn so many ways: pulled up for a high waisted look, or rolled down, or even pulled up into a little strapless number. Our Rael sweatshirt has been a big hit. Made out of our new bamboo fleece, it's so soft and cozy, but loose and cool...it's the perfect little top.
5) Every piece is designed to go together for endless combinations
The mix and match outfits here are perfect for travel. Take any piece from any person and match it with what one of the others are wearing for endless options. With Movement it is possible to be sustainable and comfortable, while looking super classy, on trend, and fashionable in any country in the world.
Our clothing is really season-less with it's ability to layer up or layer down. One of our customers is literally going from the Antarctic to the Amazon, and another one is going from Zurich to Peru. That's what makes Movement so great for travel.
